If you’ve lived in Oxford long enough, you already know the move-in weekend playbook. The Square gets packed, grocery runs turn into a 45-minute ordeal, and every restaurant has a wait. So while thousands of freshman families are hauling mini-fridges into the dorms, plenty of longtime locals are doing something smarter: they’re leaving town.
The go-to move? Orange Beach, Alabama. It’s close enough for a long weekend, far enough to actually unplug, and it’s practically a Mississippi tradition — half the license plates on the beach are from home.
Why Orange Beach, Specifically
Orange Beach sits right next to Gulf Shores on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, and it’s the beach town most Mississippians default to — closer than Florida’s better-known spots, with calmer water and less of the spring-break chaos.
- Distance from Oxford: about 385 miles
- Drive time: roughly 6 hours 30 minutes, nonstop
- Our route: MS-6 E to Tupelo, then US-45 S the rest of the way through the Columbus/Meridian corridor and into Alabama toward Mobile and Orange Beach
- Good stopping point: Meridian, MS, roughly 2 hours in — a solid spot for gas and food
The Local’s Timing Trick
Here’s the actual strategy: leave Thursday night or before sunrise Friday. Move-in traffic builds through the day Friday and doesn’t really clear until Sunday afternoon, so the earlier you’re out of Oxford, the smoother your exit. Coming home Sunday evening or Monday morning also means you roll back into a town that’s already quieted down.
What to Do Once You’re There
The Wharf — the main strip along the Intracoastal Waterway, with restaurants, shops, a Ferris wheel, mini golf, and live music most evenings. It’s the easiest place to fill a beach-trip night.
Dolphin cruises — the waters around Orange Beach have a resident bottlenose dolphin population, and a short boat trip is an easy way to fill an afternoon, especially with kids.
Gulf State Park — over 6,000 acres and roughly 28 miles of trails if you want to break up beach time with something active. The Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail winds through coastal forest and wetlands.
Just the beach — honestly, the simplest plan is often the best one. Sugar-white sand, calm surf, and nowhere you have to be.
The Bottom Line
Move-in weekend in Oxford is a great time to be almost anywhere else in Oxford. If you can swing it, a long weekend in Orange Beach is the classic local move — close enough to make it work, far enough to actually feel like a break, and a tradition plenty of Oxford families lean on every August.
